Pit Posse’s Colten Maynard is a name to know. He started racing when he was six years old and charted some pretty stellar results, including a win in
FLmx: What is your first motorcycle memory?
CM: My first bike was a PW50. It was purple and white, and it sounded mean.
FLmx: Have you always had #155?
CM: No, my first number was 12, and that’s because when I had my PW50 my dad had those sticker sheets for mailboxes, and all he had was a one and a two. So I chose twelve. At
FLmx: How was your dad involved in your racing; he was a racer himself?
CM: He grew up racing every now and again, but was never involved in it like I was.
FLmx: What was your most memorable race result, you won at the Las Vegas World Mini; you won Branson and a few qualifers?
CM:
FLmx: You suffered a bunch of injuries back in the day…which was the worst one?
CM: I guess a broken back. They all sucked though.
FLmx: How did you realize that the injuries were not worth the risk?
CM: I never have.
FLmx: Why did you quit racing?
CM: With my string of injuries and luck, I knew it wasn’t going to stop. So I needed to start chasing my business dreams instead of motocross dreams. People think I quit for other reasons. But that’s it.
FLmx: Tell me about how Pit Posse came about with Outlaw and who is involved?
CM: Pit Posse and Outlaw Racing Products are both owned by my dad, Rick. Pit Posse is the tools, trailer accessories, and shop accessories. Outlaw Racing is our bike accessory line. Like the billet stuff, handlebars, filters, stuff like that.
FLmx: The company is based in
CM: I live in
FLmx: Has your experience racing carried over into your business with Pit Posse?
CM: I think experience in racing can help you in pretty much anything. It teaches you so much. Also, after actually being in the positions that these kids are in now, I know what I did and did not like about my reps with past sponsors. So it helps a lot.
FLmx: Have you learned anything or had any business surprises?
CM: I’ve learned that in this industry, you need be on top of your game.
FLmx: You used to race against some of the top dogs and now you sponsor them. How do you pick your riders?
CM: It’s not really picking a rider. It’s picking the whole package, like the Butler Brothers team. When we sponsored them, it wasn’t like we sponsor them to give them free tools and they run the stickers. They brought a whole marketing plan to the table for their sponsors.
FLmx: What is the main focus of Pit Posse? Do you offer any innovative products that no one else does?
CM: We have a lot of tools that are new that no one else has, as well as trailer accessories. We are working on a lot of new things for Outlaw Racing that will be really cool when they come out.
FLmx: Who are some of your most loyal brands or companies? Does it help having a good relationship?
CM: We are close with a lot of companies. We are located about thirty minutes from Vortex, and we all know each other there. I’ve been good friends with Brady, who works for Smith now, since I have been riding 80s. He has always helped me out a lot. It for sure helps knowing people in the industry. When people see someone in the industry using a certain brand product, they know that they can get any product they want, and when they see you with your brand, they know it’s the best.
FLmx: What’s next for Pit Posse? Anything up and coming?
CM: I think our next race will be Mini Olympics at Gatorback.
FLmx: Do you still train and compete? I’ve seen you in a few pit bike races?
CM: I will be training every day for my comeback in +25 in 2015.
FLmx: Do you have any sponsors or anyone you would like to thank?
CM: Pit Posse and Outlaw Racing obviously. Brady at Smith Optics. Monster Energy, Freestyle Watches, Stellar MX, FLmx, Vortex, and anyone out there who is supporting Pit Posse and Outlaw.
