FLmx: Jessica, congratulations on another great MX season. You captured another WMA Title and proved to everyone once again you are the fastest Women racer in the world! How do you feel this year went?

Patterson: I couldn't have asked for a better year, even though I had a few down falls I still was able to keep it together and win some more championships and my 5th WMA Championship. I really worked hard to make sure I was going to be able to stay on top with all the new talent coming up and others wanting to take my number one plate.

FLmx: Lets get back to your beginning. How old were you when you started riding and racing MX? How did you get involved?

Patterson: I started riding around the yard when I was 7 years old then not until 9 did I start racing. My dad wanted to make sure I was wanting to do it and not just a phase before he starting putting all his money and time into me. He also raced back in the day and he still had a bike when I was little so I think just being around him and riding with him and then going to some races and watching RC ride, I was hooked and wanted to race. He then built me a track in the back yard and I practiced when RC and Earl May would come over to ride, then it was ON!

FLmx: I remember watching you on KX 80's ripping it up, beating almost all of the boys! Is that where most of your speed came from, racing with all the boys?

Patterson: Yeah, ever since I started I have always raced with the boys. Back then there wasn't many women racing and there wasn't a WMA either. I still think today even racing with the guys helps your speed and to be more aggressive on the track and so I carry that over to the women's class and I think that is what has gotten me to where I am today

FLmx: When you were growing up did you want to pursue racing MX as a career?

Patterson: I didn't know what I wanted to do and never really thought about it. I was a regular public school student that played soccer and raced on the weekends and sometimes practice in my back yard. Then I started getting more into soccer and I was invited to be on a traveling team and play for my school so then I would have to play soccer pretty much full time; and they didn't want me to ride so that I wouldn't get hurt. Then I had to make a decision, I wasn't that great at mx but I loved it and had so much more fun. I dropped soccer and started racing pretty much every weekend. I slowly got better and better, I rode more and then more women were starting to race so I started going to do some of the nationals, I put in some good results and I got picked up by Team Green. I started winning and making a little bit of money and thought maybe if I won some more, got more sponsors to help out, that I could try and do it full time and I did.

FLmx: MX is a very hard sport to make a career out of, never the less as a female! How have you been able to do it over the years?

Patterson: Like you said for a female it is very hard to make a career out of it. We don't get paid like the guys but most people think that sponsorship comes easier for females, which is not true. I have worked very hard to get what I have now. For a while I was still sponsored by mom and dad and just making it race to race. Now that women's motocross has grown and sponsors are taking us more seriously, we are getting better support. Today I wouldn't be able to do it with out American Honda, Honda of Houston, Bad Boy Power Drink, FOX and all my other awesome sponsors

FLmx: Each year it seems like new girls are coming up and are always looking to knock you off that top spot, but no one has been able to do that. You just keep getting faster and stronger than anyone else. What is the secret?

Patterson: Well, if I told you then it wouldn't be a secret would it? haha No, but I do train very hard and I give it 100% each and every day.

FLmx: I would say your biggest rival is Tarah Geiger. She has snatched the Loretta Title from you these past few years, but you seem to be able to win the WMA Series. What is going on with that?

jp_8_446

Patterson: haha Yeah, Tarah has been a big rival and we have had a few run in's but all it did was make women's motocross more exciting. I'm not sure what the deal is with me and Loretta's but I'm hoping to figure that out very soon!

FLmx: Their is a lot of talk about Ashley Fiolek making the jump up to Pro this year. How do you think she will do this next year?

Patterson: Ashley is a very talented rider and I think she will do just fine.

FLmx: Being from Tallahassee, did you grow up riding with RC?

Patterson: Yeah that's how I pretty much started racing. He came and rode at my house a lot and I would train with him and Earl May, I learned a lot from those two.

FLmx: These days now, you are hot and heavy with Eddie Ray. You are the perfect MX family and travel the country together. Expand a little bit about your relationship.

Patterson: Well we still aren't engaged but pretty close. We do travel the country 10 months out of the year together, riding and training. Everyone calls Eddie my "Man Friend", he's good for just about anything and he does so much for me, from making sure Im up on time, to sacrificing his riding to make sure that my race and practice bikes are the best that they can be and doing moto's and sprints with me. He gets upset if I try to slack any and he is a very good motivator. We are both still very young at heart and love to have fun. After big races we go do fun stuff or go to a casino and play some poker! Like every couple we have our up and downs but I'm very thankful that I have him there for me.

FLmx: What is life on the road like? Traveling to different races and battling for the next championship?

Patterson: Staying on the road keeps things exciting, we are always riding at different tracks and riding with other people. We get to see and do things a lot of other people wish that they could do. You could say we are "Livin the Dream".

FLmx: When you do stop racing, (don't see that happening any time soon) what would you like to do next?

Patterson: I would like to have a women's motocross team. I want to help women's mx grow big enough so that other girls can make a living at racing also. I would like to be a Mitch Payton of Women, and have a very successful team and teach them things to help them along the way. I'm sure in the mix of all that I would love to do some more supermoto and my dream would be to drive trophy trucks.

FLmx: What would you like to accomplish in your future years of racing?

Patterson: I want to keep riding and training hard each year and take home a few more championships. I would like to just keep women's motocross growing and I would like to be remembered as a good ambassador to the sport. Oh, and I will win Loretta Lynn's again!

FLmx: Who do you see is going to be your biggest threat this next year?

I can't name just one person, there is so much new talent coming up and others that are wanting to take my plate so Ill just have to be ready for whatever is thrown to me.

FLmx: Good luck with everything and keep bringing those titles home to Florida. Who would you like to thank?

Patterson: Yes of course I try and keep Florida on the map for sure, but I couldn't do it with out my sponsors.
